Stage 4 kidney dz: Stage 4 chronic kidney disease ( kidney function of 15-30%) occurs for many reasons. People with stable stage 4 disease can live fairly normal lives. However, if the kidney disease is progressing rapidly, it can be associated with more complications (anemia, bone disease, end stage renal disease with dialysis). It is important to follow closely with a nephrologist.

See below: A person with stage 4 chronic kidney disease (ckd) has advanced kidney damage with a severe decrease in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) to 15-30 ml/min. It is likely someone with stage 4 CKD will need dialysis or a kidney transplant in the near future.

I have stage 4 kidney disease. What can be done if anything? Is it bad to have stage 4?

Need to find cause: Staging is meant for chronic kidney disease, means that the kidney functions have been stable for 3 months during which time there are no ongoing acute medical problems. It is based on GFR calculation which is an estimate of kidney function. I certainly suggest to see a nephrologist who will do necessary work up to find the cause, stage appropriately, and improve whenever possible.
A 55-year-old female asked:

Can stage 4 kidney disease be cured? If levels are stable, how can I tell if getting worse. What symptoms should I look for?

Kidney Disease Cure: You should ask the doctor who told you that you had stage 4 kidney disease to refer you to a nephrologist and to tell you what caused it. It can be caused by diabetes, high bp, medicines, obstruction and diseases of the kidney. See a nephrologist for other tests and be followed by him. Symptoms of kidney failure may include weakness, nausea, itching, a bitter taste in your mouth among others.

CKD stage 4: Stage 4 chronic kidney disease means that the person's glomerular filtration rate is between 15-29 ml/min. This indicates the person has severely compromised kidney function and the person does not have to start some sort of renal replacement therapy. Have the person see a nephrologist to treat any anemia or problems with high parathyroid hormone levels. Good luck.
