Salivary gland infns: These infections are not usually contageous. Most salivary gland infections are due to staphylococcus aureus or oral flora stuck behind a stone or a 'pinched off' salivary duct. Rarely, enteric flora can cause infection usually in persons in nursing homes. Viral infections rarely cause swollen salivary or parotid gland infections now days as most are immunized against mumps.
