Low estrogen: Mid-cycle spotting usually is a result of low peri-ovualtory estrogen. With ovulation, estrogen levels drop. If already low, the additional drop with ovulation can cause spotting. The estrogen is coming from the growing egg and is therefore low as a result of the egg quality that month. Uterine factors such as polyps and fibroids can also result in spotting.
