Big question!: There is usually no effect on fertility in the year following discontinuation of birth control. You need an evaluation for infertility that would include a thorough history, exam, ultrasound, labs and a semen analysis of your partner.

Can not get pregnant: There are many reasons that one cannot get pregnant. If you have tried for over one year then you should see a fertility specialist.

Infertility: Infertility is diagnosed after 12 months of active sexual activity w/o contraception that hasn't resulted in a pregnancy. At that point, one should go see a reproductive endocrinologist for an evaluation & treatment options. In the meantime, start taking prenatal vitamins to minimize your risk for neural tube defects. And have your partner get semen analysis (sperm count).
