What is the difference between a broke back and vertebrea compound fractures?

None of those: Are descriptive of any particular type of fracture. Fracture implies the cracking or breaking of a hard object or material. So "broke back" is a non-medical colloquial description. A compound fracture, implies the fracture is not simple (not only one fracture line), there are multiple fracture lines.
