Acne is an infection: Clindamycin can increase the effectiveness of retin a (tretinoin) by killing the bacteria in the follicles that is causing the infection.

Often used together: But Clindamycin is used less often now. Acne is not an infection and Clindamycin is less effective than several other agents. Most dermatologists do not use Clindamycin with retinoids.
