Can coughing damage lungs?

Yes but unlikely...: Cough as a result of the occasional cold virus is unlikely to cause any lung damage. Even the whooping cough in the unvaccinated is unlikely to cause lung damage per se (unless you're a newborn, in which case your risk of death in much greater). However, one could develop a pneumothorax as a result of coughing but it's unlikely unless underlying disease process. Check out http://goo.Gl/pqfybx.
