A member asked:

What is expected alt (sgpt) and ast (sgot) in alcoholic?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: If he's been sober for a few days (good!), they're likely to be normal. If he's abusing alcohol enough to hurt himself / others, they can still be within the normal range, or they can be high. If they're above 400, he's probably got alcoholic hepatitis. Sgpt tends to be lower than SGOT in drinkers. The diagnosis of alcoholism is clinical, not lab based -- but you knew that.
