The skin barrier ...: Is broken with a burn or abrasion injury. The opening provides a portal whereby germs (bacteria) can more easily enter the body, leading to possible infection. That is why topical anti-microbials (e.g., bacitracin, polysporin, (bacitracin and polymyxin) neosporin, silvadene) are an important part of treatment for such injuries.
