Abortive medications: There are a group of medications that have been developed specifically to stop migraine headaches as they evolve. They are referred to as abortives because that stop or abort the symptoms (both headache and aura) as they develop. Some of these drugs include tryptans (e.g.-imitrex), anti-inflammatories (e.g.-motrin) and opiates (e.g.-morphine).
