Shorter the better: The reason you get stitches are to control bleeding, avoid infection, decrease scar formation, decrease healing time. The longer you wait to get stitches, the less effective it will be at the above issues.

UPTO 24 HOURS BUT: Stiches can be given upto 24 hours after a clean cut(laceration) but one should not wait that long, if the cut needs stitches the sooner it is done better it is for healing of the laceration.
