Complex: M. Avium- intracellulare (mac) infections can result in lung and other organ damage , depending on the severity of immunodeficiency. In people with an intact immune system , mac infection is a slow process and can take years before therapy is initiated (2 or 3 antibiotics- e.g. Ethambutol, cipro, (ciprofloxacin) and rifabutin). Therapy can last a minimum of 12 months if a lung infection is involved.
