How many years does it take to burn out the pancreas and get type 2 diabetes?

Dr. James Chu answered

Usually many years: Most studies indicate that it takes decades of preceding Insulin resistance/high Insulin levels before the pancreas burns out to result in t2 diabetes. However, we are seeing t2 diabetes in children and teenagers who have not had decades of life to accomplish this. Thus, the rate of pancreas burn out and rate of progression to t2 diabetes can vary. Pre-diabetes is an indicator that you are close.
