Lactose intolerance: Milk contains lactose, or milk sugar. The intestinal enzyme lactase is needed to digest it. Humans evolved to comsume milk only in infancy, and the amount of lactase in the intestines declines as we age. When there isn't enough, milk products are poorly digested, resulting in diarrhea. Lactose intolerance symptoms can begin as early as age 10, as late as 90 (or never), and anywhere between.
