Bruising: Indicates bleeding below the skin. As hemoglobin is released from spilled red blood cells, it becomes metabolized and changes color. As the subcutaneous (or intramuscular or wherever) bleeding persists, the bruise becomes larger. A bruise that is decreasing in size and changing color from purple to yellow is indicative of healing.
