Do hernias go away or become less painful over time?

Only after surgery: The only way for a hernia to go away is to have it surgically repaired (exception: umbilical hernias in infants). The pain from a hernia may wax-and-wane, especially associated with exertional activity, but is likely to worsen in time, especially as the hernia enlarges. If you are healthy and your quality of life is being compromised by your hernia, seek out the opinion of a hernia surgeon.

No: Hernias only "go away" after surgical repair, and that isn't even 100%. A hernia can become less painful over time, but that is unusual. See a general surgeon for a consultation for more info regarding your case.
