A member asked:

What is the medical term for exposed jawbone?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Exposed jawbone: The term depends on the source of the problem. Normally, there should be no exposed bone in the jaw. If there is, it's abnormal and usually painful. If it's after an oral surgical procedure, it may be a dehiscence or an infection. It can also be cause by certain medications (bisphosphonates) and is termed osteonecrosis, or dead bone. You should see a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
