Yes: Opiate detox and dependence can be physically and emotionally distressing. Detox treatment is recommended to handle opiate withdrawal symptoms followed by addiction treatment. Methadone is one option for handling opiate detox and addiction treatment. Detox alone will not address the issues underlying addictive behavior. Opiate addiction treatment is necessary to help combat relapse.

Mutual support helps: Methadone might provide biological support. Consider attending a meeting of narcotics anonymous for social support.

A 35-year-old member asked:
Aside from methadone, what are the other drugs used to treat addiction?

Let's clarify this: Neither Methadone or buphrenorpine "treat" addiction. They are fda approved to maintain addictions. That's it. In other words, to keep you from withdrawing. Treatment of addiction to opiates requires: commitment, help and a plan. Once you get these 3 things, stick to the plan. Period. In life there are a lot of things that are simple but not easy. This is a great example of "simple, not easy".
