Hive treatment: The usual dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (diphenydramine) to treat allergic reactions including hives is 25 to 50 mg every 6 hours. Other nonprescription options for treating hives that won't cause drowsiness are zyrtec (cetirizine), Allegra (fexofenadine) and Claritin (loratadine).
