No human studies: Salvia divinorum has no human studies of its therapeutic effects. It does cause hallucinations. Its main active ingredient (salvinorin a) has been compared to lsd, which can also cause "bad trips." salvinorin a is also a kappa-opioid agonist that can cause depressive reactions in rats. It can also cause strong depersonalization, which some find very uncomfortable. These effects can persist.

You're smart!: Anyone who ever used lsd will tell you that the experience is highly dependent on the setting. If you're happy and with good friends in a secure setting, you're likely to have a good trip. But if you're anxious, paranoid, unhappy, insecure, etc, the trip will be very bad. I have to suspect salvia has similar properties.
