USUALLY BENIGN: 'random' bruises are a common problem with most patients having no diagnosis. Bruises can occur with incidental trauma. We see bruising in patients who take Aspirin or blood thinners. You may need lab to check platelet count or bleeding times (pt, ptt, bt) but these are usually normal. If bruising progresses then further testing may be required.

Check bloodwork: Spontaneous bruising can be a sign of a bleeding problem such as hemophilia or von willebrands disease. Some medications can effect bleeding too. It is a good idea to get a good history, exam and probably some bloodworm to know what is going on.
