Depends time of day: Morning serum cortisol levels range about 7-25 mcg/dl. Evening cortisol levels are lower and range from 2-14. Cortisol is secreted by the adrenal gland and a high level can have multiple causes, both primary and secondary. This is because two other glands are involved with the level of cortisol--pituitary gland and hypothalamus, both in the brain. Low grade fever is not a typical symptom of this.
