Opening tear duct: The puncture is the opening to the nasolacrimal duct, or tear duct , which carries tears from the eye to the nose. If the punctum is narrow, or stenotic, that can impede proper tear drainage, resulting in tearing, or epiphora. Punctplasty enlarges the tear duct opening, to improve tear drainage.

Punctoplasty: Punctoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct improper tear drainage of the eyes ('tearing eyes'). This procedure is performed mostly for 2 conditions: 1) when the lacrimal punctum ('plug hole) for tear drainage is blocked (common in elderly people), or 2) when tear duct is not opening properly (prevalent in newborn babies).
