Many possible causes: If you have sharp pain when you take a deep breath, you may have pleuritic chest pain. Some of the more common causes of this type of discomfort include pleurisy, or an inflammation of the lining of the lung, which may be caused by a viral infection. You may also have a musculoskeletal cause for your discomfort, such as inflammation of components of the rib cage(costochondritis). Hard to be sure.
