Several options: Overuse, muscle sprain/strain, and localized inflammation are possible causes. It is also possible to have pathology within the chest (for example, a lesion on the back part of the chest wall) which could result in cramping in that area. A pinched nerve (i.e. Thoracic radiculopathy) is another possibility.
