Splenomegaly: The spleen is a very vascular organ in our body responsible for many functions, but can enlarge when over-taxed by filtering damaged blood cells or fighting infection. When it is large, it is very tense and at risk for rupture (a medical emergency). People with enlarged spleens are advised against contact sports or any activity that puts them at risk for abdominal trauma.
