A member asked:

Can you take tetracycline when you have oral contraceptive pills?

In general,: I tell patients to use a back up method like a condom for 9-10 days after stopping another medication like an antibiotic. It is unlikely that most antibiotics will reduce the effectiveness of your birth control, but be on the safe side and use another form for now. Keep taking the pills.

Yes, no problem: It used to be common advice that antibiotics can interfere with hormonal contraceptives. It was always theoretical with little actual proof, and current evidence indicates no such problem except sometimes with rifampin, an uncommonly used antibiotic.
