Does an iud cause precanerous cells?

No: An iud does not cause precancerous cells on the cervix. However because occasionally iud can cause irritation on the cervix some women can have a mildly abnormal pap smear. The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud which has Progesterone actually decreases the chance of precancerous cells in the lining of the uterus.

IUDs are Safe: If the idea of having something inserted into your body and leaving it there for years freaks you out, you can rest easy: A new study published in the May issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that the intrauterine device...is a safe birth control method for women of any age, including teenagers. http://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/great-news-about-iuds
