Depends on pain: It depends on the pain. However, exercise is normally beneficial in treating most types of chronic pain as long as it does not aggravate the pain. You are currently in physical therapy? I would recommend asking your therapist, who will have a better idea of your pain, and follow up with your physician. Again, exercise and strengthening will normally benefit pain issues, depending on the pain issue.
