Could be : A tendon problem if does not self resolve quickly or returns. Meanwhile take therapeutic doses of Ibuprofen (4 with food 3 times a day) or 3 aleve (naproxen) 2 times a day with food. You would need to see a hand specialist.

Couple things: Thumb pain can be due to a couple things. You could have carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, tendonitis, trauma, etc. However, yours sounds like it may be dequervaines tenosynovitis, especially if the pain is on the outside of your thumb near the base. You could also have a trigger finger that is locking up with increased inflammation. Number of injections and surgeries if nsaids do not help.
