A member asked:

I've been spotting a lot this month with my period and if it's not blood then it's a weird brown color, what does that mean?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Brown = old blood: Brown discharge is old blood. The hemoglobin in red blood cells oxidizes over time and turns the blood brown. If it's diluted, it mixes with your normal vaginal discharge and can have a creamy brown consistency. Likely you're having some breakthrough bleeding. At 17, that can be normal. Extremes of weight (thin/heavy) can also cause. You can see a doctor, maybe birth control to help regulate.
