Rarely.: Most "slipped discs" heal up over time. Pain may ensue from height loss or hypermobility associated with disc degeneration. The load on the facet joints, vertebral body endplates and paraspinous muscles changes after disc herniations so you may get pain from the surrounding structures, not the disc itself. Often pain gets better when the disc space fills in with bone over time "autofusion".

Not necessarily: Initial treatment for slipped disk is short period of rest with medications for the pain, followed by physical therapy. Most people recover and return to their normal activities. More severe pain may require intraspinal steroid injections. Symptoms of disk herniation or protrusion may burn out with time. Lot of variables including degree of nerve compression, type of herniation.Surgery sometimes.
