Depends: The tattoo should be okay if it isn't in the area of the surgery and if it isn't a skin surgery. The big risk of tattoo placement is possible infection and possible allergic reaction to the ink. Both those side effects would impact a skin surgery in the area and it would not be advisable. If you get an infection, you are putting a big stress on your body to overcome that and heal from surgery.
