Accessory Muscles: The diaphragm is the muscle that is used primarily for breathing. It is attached to the lower ribs and separates the chest from the belly. Other muscles used to breathe are called accessory muscles of respiration. They are in the neck and between the ribs. Anything that irritates those muscles can cause pain with breathing. Oddly, some irritations at or below the diaphragm can radiate up.
