A 31-year-old member asked:

after applying benzoyl peroxide do you wash it off?

Depends : Some benzoyl peroxide based washes are meant to be washed off. Cream and gel preparations are meant to be left on. The type of benzoyl peroxide dictates whether to leave it on. Keep in mind that it may bleach your clothes or linens, so sleep in a raggedy t-shirt if you are using it at night.

If I wash my hands regularly, can I decrease the likelihood of contracting the common cold?

Yes: The flu (influenza) and common colds are viral infections. Washing one's hands after touching other people, or after touching objects that other people touch (knobs, railings, handles, phones, keyboards, etc...), can remove viruses from one's hands so there will be less chance of getting sick from the flu or the common cold. However, too much handwashing will cause an eczema rash on the hands.

How often should you wash you face in order to have perfect skin?

Dr. Katherine Brown
Dermatology 16 years experience
Depends: Determining the appropriate frequency to wash your face depends on many factors, like: 1) the type of skin you have -- is it dry? Oily? Sensitive?; 2) what you use to wash your face; 3) the presence of any underlying skin conditions. As such, there is no universal answer for everyone. A dermatologist can help you determine the right frequency and products to use, in individualizing a regimen.

No: Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. There is no cure for viruses, just treating the symptoms and pain until the resolve themselves(10-14 days). Benzoyl peroxide may dry them or crust them over. There are medication (oral and topical) that will help. Also, some supplements and Amino Acids that have been shown to make them go away quickly.

I accidentally sprayed something on my eye and it's burning! what should I do to wash it out?

Rinse it out!: As soon as possible irrigate the eye with tap water or an irrigating solution for a minimum of 15 minutes. You should also see a doctor asap to make sure that it did not permanently damage the eye.
