A member asked:

What's the initial management of a patient that has just contracted hiv within the past 3-5 days? what's the prognosis of such "early" detection?

Prognosis good: Some semantics: contracting hiv, means that one has been exposed to the virus, generally through blood exchange, sexual activity with HIV infected person, IV drug use...The test for HIV does not become + for weeks after exposure. Perhaps you mean that a DX of aids was made a few days ago. Either way, early detection makes it very treatable and today likely curable. Infectious disease doc is best.

Get tested: You seem to be past the time when post-exposure prophylaxis could be administered. You need to get tested now to ensure that you are HIV negative. Then get tested every 6 weeks or so. If all those results are negative, get HIV nucleic acid test at 6 months after exposure.
