That depends: According to planned parenthood "if you get the birth control shot within the first seven days after the start of your period, you are protected from pregnancy immediately." otherwise you may need back up birth control for the first week after injection. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-shot-depo-provera-4242.htm.
