Depends on infection: Infection that involves the jawbone can be serious. Taking antibiotic by mouth may provide unpredictable absorption and level of antibiotic in the body. It is usually tried first. If that fails to control the infection, IV antibiotics and possible debridement, cleaning of the infected bone, are usually done. Other tests may also be done. Your treating doctor will be able to advise you.
