Depends: Once the need for a liver transplant is anticipated, your child will be placed on the waiting list. Many factors will determine the odds or the duration of wait. Frequent visits with your transplant surgeon / team is essential to ensure the status of your child is up to date. Many patients found it helpful to google meld: model for end-stage liver disease.

Depends: This is a difficult question. There are 300-400 liver transplants done in the U.S. Each year for kids under 5 years old. Right now there are just over 200 kids under 5 waiting for a liver. This suggests that if a 1 year old needs one they will get one. A lot of these transplants are from living donors (usually parents). Also some centers do many more pediatric transplants than others.

Continued: Your best option would be to get listed at centers that do a large volume of pediatric work, consider living donation (not all centers do living liver donation), and if you have the option being listed in multiple regions.
