Yes.: An onlay will give support to an otherwise unstable tooth that doesn't have enough tooth structure to support your bite.

Yes,but: The bone must not be at the same level as the tooth. Crown lengthening happens when the decay is very deep and the preparation is at the same level as the bone. Crown lengthening can also be performed to aesthetically place the gums at a better level. Sounds like you could be ok, but have your dentist show you your x-ray for clarification so you feel comfortable receiving treatment.
