Depends: Yes, if knee joint is not stable. But if stable, with warmup, stretching and moderation, is safe.

Overuse injuries: Overuse and improper form can always accelerate wear and tear of joints. I strongly advice you have your feet evaluated for proper foot alignment and evaluation of your arch, whether you land on the inside, outside or dead on mid foot. You'll be amazed how many problems can be avoided by wearing the correct brand of running shoe for you. I walk/jog 45 mins a day, the shoe makes a big difference!
