Swelling: Has potential of being serious but at your age unusual unless you drink alcohol and eat a lot of salt. Weight gain is also a contributing factor.

Ankle stress: If additional weight is putting additional stress to a biomechanically weak foot or ankle this could resulot in swelling of your ankles. Agree that you should limit salt, and check for lymphedema or possible venous insufficiency. Those conditions of the lower extremity could be involved with sdditional weight.
