Presbyopia: As you age, your accommodation decreases till the point when your reading and intermediate distance vision becomes difficult(presbyopia). Since you are nearsighted, by taking off your glasses, you are able to see more comfortably near to you without the strain that you would feel with your glasses on. This is when the option of progressive add lenses may be beneficial. Presbyopia does progress.

Can't see the future: Even an eye specialist might not be able to see into the future regarding worsening, but many people at middle age do become far sighted in addition to their earlier near-sightedness. If simply removing your glasses enables reading & PC use you might only need to do that. Use your glasses for other activities. But if you strain at normal distance to read, consider bifocals or a separate reading rx.

Presbyopia: You are experiencing what we all do beginning age 40-48 the human eye begins to loose the ability to focus. The cause is decrease in the function of the ciliary muscle this muscle attaches to the lens by the zonules and causes change in the thickness of the lens to allow focusing. If your glasses have been over an exam will reveal if you need reading (progressive addition or bifocal) glasses.
