It should go away: Local pain at the puncture site generally goes away after a few days. This is more like a muscle soreness and is readily treated with medications like tylenol (acetaminophen). You can also develop a spinal headache which is from the drainage of the spinal fluid. This generally goes away with bedrest. If it does not, an anesthesiologist can do a blood patch to help block the leakage and thus decrease the headache.

It will heal: It goes away over the course of several days. Take tylenol (acetaminophen) in the meantime. Ibuprofen slows the healing process so best be avoided for the first few days.

Not persistent: Have NEVER found that a lumbar puncture causes persistent local needle pain longer than 2-3 days. If your question involves a "post-spinal headache", this could last several weeks if no intervention. This problem typically reverses with a Blood Patch.
