A member asked:

Can sickle cell trait be transferred during sexual intercourse?

See below.: The gene responsible for sickle cell is a mutated version of the beta-globin gene. This is a genetic disorder you inherit from your parents. If you inherit one normal and one sickle beta-globin, you have sickle cell trait. If you are asking whether you can 'catch' sickle cell trait like an infection through sex, the answer is no.

Depends: Sickle cell trait is a genetic condition, not a sexually transmitted disease. You can not spread it to your sexual partner. You can transmit it to your offspring (children) during sex. Individuals with sickle cell trait can have children with no sickle cell trait, children with sickle cell trait, and children with sickle cell disease depending on the sickle cell status of the partner.
