How long does sepsis recovery take?

Dr. William Walsh

Quite variable: Depending on the severity of the initial illness, whether or not there was related organ failure (the need for a ventilator, the need for medications or devices to keep the heart and blood pressure going, the need for dialysis, etc), the nature of the infecting organism (how well they respond to antibiotics) and the health of the patient.... It could be 1-2 days or months-years.

Variable: Sepsis can be mild to severe, so the recovery is dependent on the severity. Severe sepsis can require weeks to months to recover. Mild sepsis can be overcome in days.
A 42-year-old member asked:

Please tell me how long it takes for to cure sepsis?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Matthew Majzun
Pulmonary Critical Care 14 years experience
Depends...: On a couple of things. First, what type of infection - some resolve quickly with treatment, others may take longer? Second, how many organ systems were impacted by the infection - was there breathing failure, kidney failure, confusion, etc? Also, and probably most important - what was the patient's baseline health and age? Young, healthy people can do better, but can still die from sepsis.
A 48-year-old member asked:

How long does sepsis take, after infection?

Dr. John Leander Po

Quickly...: Once bacteria get into the blood, depending on the bacteria, its inoculation size, and its virulence, the development of all the signs and symptoms of sepsis can develop quickly, as is seen with staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pyogenes infections.
