A member asked:

Do people with lung damage from asthma/repeated bronchitis ever need lung transplants? if so, are they cured of asthma? how bad can lung damage get?

Asthma: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition that can be well-controlled with inhaled controller medications. Rarely, if ever, do patients require a lung transplant for this condition. Lung transplants are usually due to some other serious conditions that infiltrate the pulmonary tissue. Asthma tends not to be one of them. People die from asthma by not following treatment guidelines.

Rarely: Only patients with severe lung damage will need lung transplantation. Lot can be done for COPD using medicines, exercise and not smoking.
