Medical Terminology: Pharyngitis is a medical diagnosis. A sore throat is a symptom of pharyngitis. They are the same thing.

No difference: A sore throat is common lay persons jargon for a possible pain and inflamation in the throat whereas Pharyngitis is the professional medical term for inflammation and infection of the throat (pharynx). Thus technically there is minimal difference and whist a sore throat is the presenting complaint of a patient, pharyngitis is the diagnosis by the physician
