DSM-V criteria of : Autistic disorder came from in-depth research on diagnosis variability + barriers to funding & services from schools/ other agencies for Asperger syndrome or pdd-nos diagnoses. Because underlying neurodevelopmental deficits are the same in all spectrum disorders, all need the same level of care. "social communication disorder" is used for young kids who usually don't have stereotypies.
