A member asked:

My 11 year old son tested positive today for type a flu. is it possible to get it this time of the year? or misdiagnoses?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

High false-positives: It is theoretically positive to get influenza type a during august (see http://www.Cdc.Gov/flu/weekly/), but the chance that the rapid flu test reported a false positive is quite high. See http://www.Cdc.Gov/flu/professionals/diagnosis/rapidlab.Htm for a nice explanation. A more specific test could be done to confirm, but it probably is not worth it.
